Sophomores Peyton Bowman (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie) and Cora Vyhnanek (Colchester, Ill./West Prairie) each reached a statistical milestone in the same match during the 17th-ranked Carl Sandburg College volleyball team’s weekend at the Parkland North vs. South Challenge in Champaign.

The Chargers (30-11) went 1-3 over Friday and Saturday’s action, but their 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 sweep of Wabash Valley on Saturday included Bowman putting down the 1,000th kill of her career and Vyhnanek handing out her 2,500th career assist.

Bowman’s fourth kill against the Warriors put her at 1,000 as a Charger, and she finished with 21 in the match. She added another 21 kills in Sandburg’s next match against Lincoln Land, giving her 1,038 in her career.

The seventh of Vyhnanek’s 36 assists against Wabash Valley gave her 2,500 as a Charger. She tacked on 46 assists later in the day against Lincoln Land and sits at 2,575 in her Sandburg career.

The teammates going back to their days as West Prairie Cyclones have been among the best at their positions this season in all of NJCAA Division II. Bowman’s 605 kills this season ranks first the country, and she also leads the nation in hitting percentage (.506), solo blocks (101) and points (776). Vyhnanek’s 1,321 assists this year are good for third nationally.

Facing perhaps their stiffest tests of the regular season, the Chargers dropped their other three matches during the weekend. Sandburg lost 25-20, 25-12, 25-8 to top-ranked Parkland and 19-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-8 to Division I Lake Land on Friday. The Chargers’ final match Saturday was a 25-19, 25-15, 15-25, 22-25, 7-15 defeat against Lincoln Land.

UP NEXT FOR SANDBURG
The Chargers close the regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hawk with a chance to win their second straight Arrowhead Conference title. Sandburg is tied for first with Sauk Valley at 8-1. A win would give the Chargers their eighth conference title and first repeat championship since winning four in a row from 1984-87.
